Brief Capability Statement

Resources & Systems International, Inc. (RASI) is dedicated to the development and application of innovative and cost-effective solutions to the environmental, watershed management, and water resources problems. RASI offers environmental consulting services in site characterization, modeling soil and groundwater contamination from hydrocarbon spills, leaking underground tanks, landfills, nonpoint chemical sources, risk assessment, and design of optimal remedial strategies. RASI also specializes in investigation and management of multi-aquifer groundwater systems, surface water resources, and watershed management. RASI develops advanced computer models and integrated database management systems customized for clients with large site monitoring and remediation activities. RASI's litigation support services includes expert witnesses and advanced computer animations to make site data easily understandable to everyone. RASI regularly offers high quality training for environmental professionals, lectures for environmental tort law professionals and multimedia training materials for professionals interested in understanding the full impact of computer modeling on the environmental and water resources industry. RASI provides clients with advanced modeling solutions through its blend of personnel with extensive experience in sub-surface/surface modeling, field investigation and design application, data visualization, and software design.

Innovative, State-of-the-art Computer Models

  • surface water and groundwater interaction
  • finite element models to investigate fate and transport of light and dense hydrocarbons, and contaminants from non-point agricultural sources in the unsaturated zone and in groundwater
  • one, two and three dimensional finite element models for simulating water and dissolved phase transport in variably saturated porous media in complex hydrogeologic environments, incorporating convection, dispersion, diffusion, adsorption, desorption and microbial processes based on oxygen limited, anaerobic, first order, monod type biodegradation kinetics
  • models for soil vapor extraction system design including algorithms for optimizing air pumping rates and extraction well locations
  • models to simulate fate and transport of exploration and production (E&P) waste from land disposal sites
  • models to estimate spill volume from free product levels data
  • areal multiphase models for simulating migration and recovery of light hydrocarbons -- transport of soluble species emanating from light hydrocarbons to groundwater are modeled, incorporating convection, dispersion, diffusion and oxygen limited, and anaerobic first order and monod-type biodegredation kinetics
  • sediment transport 2D/3D
  • seawater intrusion in multi-aquifer system
  • fate and transport in surface water (1D/2D/3D)
Visualization tools are essential to the communication and analysis process for both field data and model results. These can be in the form of X-Y plots, 2-dimensional contour plots, 3-dimensional visualization of the site and its associated data, or time variable animations of the data.

Data Management

An enormous amount of data is recorded at most environmental and water resources projects during site characterization, site remediation, risk and exposure assessment, risk management, and the post closure period. This includes precipitation and meteorological data, stream flow/stage data, water table elevations/piezometric pressures, fluid levels in monitoring wells, ground surface and top of casing elevations, soil boring logs, species concentration at various depths in soil borings, surface and groundwater quality data, water recovery/injection rates, and free product recovery rates. It is essential for successful project management to store and arrange this data so that it can be accessed and managed efficiently and accurately. RASI can provide an integrated intra- and inter-office data management solution for its clients.
